ChatGPT Ads: What Does It Mean for Businesses?
Uncategorized
AI is becoming part of how customers research decisions.
People are using platforms such as ChatGPT to understand products, compare alternatives, evaluate providers, and narrow their options before moving to a website or speaking with a company. For businesses, that makes AI increasingly relevant to customer discovery rather than simply an experimental technology.
Advertising is now entering that environment.
OpenAI began testing ads in ChatGPT in the United States in February 2026 and has since expanded availability into additional markets. As of September 2026, the Philippines is among the countries where its self-service Ads Manager is available.
The immediate temptation is to ask whether businesses should start allocating advertising budget to ChatGPT.
There is a more useful question:
Where does ChatGPT fit within the customer journey, and does paying for visibility there contribute to a business objective?
Another Place to Capture Attention
ChatGPT Ads creates another paid opportunity for businesses to appear while customers are researching and evaluating their options.
That makes it different from simply adding another advertising placement.
Google Search often captures explicit search intent. Social advertising can create demand or maintain brand visibility. ChatGPT sits in an environment where users frequently ask questions, compare alternatives, and work through decisions.
That context may prove valuable. But the existence of a new channel does not change what happens after the click.
A business still needs a clear proposition. Its landing page needs to answer the right questions. The website needs to work properly. The offer needs to make commercial sense. Measurement needs to show whether attention is becoming meaningful business activity.
Paid media can create the opportunity to be seen. It cannot compensate indefinitely for weak fundamentals.
A New Channel Is Also a Capital Allocation Decision
Marketing teams rarely operate with unlimited budgets.
Money assigned to ChatGPT Ads may ultimately come from Google, Meta, LinkedIn, content development, SEO, or another activity already contributing to the business.
That makes the decision less about whether ChatGPT Ads is interesting and more about what deserves the next peso of investment.
Before reallocating budget, leadership should understand the objective the channel is expected to support, the customers it can realistically reach, and the point in the buying process where it may contribute.
Existing channels also provide the benchmark.
If Search is generating qualified inquiries efficiently, there needs to be a reason to reduce that investment. If Meta is successfully reaching an audience earlier in the customer journey, ChatGPT does not automatically replace that role.
The channel should earn its place in the media mix.
That is particularly important while the platform remains in development. The original ChatGPT Ads material describes the advertising system and Ads Manager as being in beta, with delivery, inventory, formats, measurement, and optimization continuing to evolve.
For most businesses, that supports controlled experimentation rather than a wholesale shift in spending.
The Larger Change Is Happening Beyond Advertising
ChatGPT Ads matters, but the more significant development is how customer discovery itself is changing.
A buyer’s path is increasingly fragmented.
Someone may discover a company through Google, encounter it again on LinkedIn or Facebook, ask an AI platform to compare available providers, review the company’s website, and only then make contact.
No single platform owns that journey.
This puts greater importance on the information surrounding the business: its website, content, reputation, positioning, technical structure, and overall digital presence. These are the signals customers encounter across multiple environments.
Advertising can increase visibility. The business still needs something credible behind that visibility.
What Businesses Should Do Now
There is little reason to move significant advertising budget simply because another platform has become available.
The more disciplined approach is to understand the channel first.
Determine whether customers are likely to use ChatGPT during research or consideration. Understand what role the platform could play alongside Search, social media, SEO, and the company’s website. If there is a reasonable case for testing, define one objective, establish the measurement criteria in advance, and begin with a controlled budget.
Then compare the results against the alternatives.
Not impressions against impressions, but business contribution against business contribution.
The Takeaway
ChatGPT Ads adds another option to the digital media mix. It does not require businesses to abandon what already works.
The more important development is that AI is becoming another environment in which customers form opinions and make decisions.
That deserves attention.
But the fundamentals remain the same: understand the customer, know what the business is trying to achieve, invest deliberately, measure what matters, and make the next decision from evidence rather than novelty.
New channels will continue to emerge.
The opportunity is to understand where they can add value, test them with purpose, and determine how they fit into the broader plan.
